5th Annual Orange County Dance Festival

AkomiDance Inc. will produce the fifth annual Orange County Dance Festival, as well as our new Rising Artists Festival, on May 8 at the Rose Center Theater. The two concerts will feature live dance works performed in person, on stage to a limited audience as well as two virtual concerts of dance films by leading artists from Southern California.

The Orange County Dance Festival (OCDF) and the Rising Artists Festival boast an impressive line up of over 20 dance companies, ranging stylistically from contemporary ballet, to modern dance, to performance art. One of the pieces showcased in OCDF will be “Witness,” co-choreographed by Janell Burgess and the late Chris Baltes, an icon of the Southern California Dance Community for over four decades. Restaged by company member Janell Burgess, this contemporary piece was “...created with the intention of learning to accept the death of our physical body. One could also observe the piece and possibly relate it to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “The Scarlet Letter” and experience feelings of guilt, separation, or simply not being accepted. In today’s world, the work could be compared to our current social climate: we are perhaps ‘witnessing’ the soloists feelings of deep sadness & solitude while sensing the separation and segregation of the ensemble dancers.” (Janell Burgess)
